GM Greg Sherman hired Joe Sacco to turn around his team and Sacco did just that. With an increase of 8 victories over last season, the Avalanche finished 2nd in the Northwest Division and 8th in the Western Conference with a record of 43-30-9. This is a 26-point improvement from last season. Paul Stastny finished as the team’s top scorer with his personal career best of 79 points. Chris Stewart had a team high 28 goals and rookie Matt Duchene ended up leading all rookies with 55 points and 24 goals.
The upcoming 2010/11 season will prove the mettle of the team as GM Greg Sherman has already made it known that they will be building from within even though the team will be well under the 56.7 million dollar salary cap. “Our plan is to build around the young, enthusiastic players we have now,” Sherman said recently. “We do want to build from within. When you look at the young players we have, some we have coming in and some of the restricted free agents we have, we want to stay with the plan in place.
